REYKJAVIK – An Icelandic volcano is still spewing ash into the air in a massive plume that has disrupted air traffic across Europe and shows little sign of letting up, officials said on Friday.

One expert said the eruption at the volcano, about 120 km (75 miles) southeast of capital Reykjavik, could abate in the coming days, but a government spokesman said ash would keep drifting into the skies of Europe.

The thick, dark brown ash cloud that shot several kilometers (miles) into the air and has drifted away from the north Atlantic island has shut down air traffic across northern Europe and restrictions remained in place in many areas.

Brasilia was the aspiration of three people: a visionary politician, Juscelino Kubitschek, who dreamed of building a new capital from nothing in the heart of his country; an architect, Oscar Niemeyer, who never put down his pencil and was so afraid of flying that he often drove for three days to reach the site; and Lucio Costa, an enlightened urbanist, who possessed not only futurist sensibilities but also a profound knowledge of his country.

Inaugurated on the 21st of april 1960, Brasilia was designed as a capital for a country that wanted to be modern at all costs. Fifty years later, Iwan Baan guides us along the avenues with the lens of his camera. The Dutch photographer is collaborating with Swiss publisher Lars Müller on the production of a book (titled “Brasilia–Chandigarh. Living with Modernity”) which, through his images and the texts by Cees Nooteboom, a comparison is drawn between Brasilia and Chandigarh, two capital cities built from scratch.

Inaugurata il 21 aprile del 1960, Brasilia fu immaginata per una nazione che voleva, a tutti i costi, essere moderna: sono passati cinquant’anni e Iwan Baan ne ha ripercorso il presente attraverso l’obiettivo della sua macchina fotografica. Il giovane fotografo olandese sta, infatti, preparando un libro (intitolato “Brasilia–Chandigarh. Living with Modernity”) per l’editore svizzero Lars Müller nel quale, attraverso le sue immagini e i testi di Cees Nooteboom, si metteranno a confronto le capitali di nuova fondazione Brasilia e Chandigarth.

SIROCCO

Bangkok’s glamour set has no fear of heights. Two of the Thailand capital’s most chic dining and drinking spots are well above the city: the Vertigo Grill & Moon Bar and the Sirocco.

VERTIGO

The whitewashed Vertigo occupies a former helicopter landing pad on the 61st floor of the Banyan Tree Hotel. Its Moon Bar, at the far end of the rooftop, opens at 5pm. The Vertigo Grill opens at 6:30pm and serves a mix of Western and Asian-Fusion cuisine.

The Sirocco is the highest open air restaurant in the world. It sits atop the 65-story high State Tower, across Charoen Krung Road from the river. The State Tower is one of the fixtures of the Bangkok skyline—it is a the tallest building in Thailand and is easily recognizable from the art deco dome at the top. Indeed, the Sirocco restaurant area wraps around the dome.

Both establishments draw a chic cocktail-centric crowd. Of the two choices, Sirocco is the larger and has the more energetic scene; its restaurant also has the better food. Vertigo is more intimate and so feels more on-top-of-the-world.

Whichever you go to, show up early to claim your seat by the ledge and to give time for the notoriously slow service to get you your drink in time for the sunset.
